Around SBN: 2012 Budweiser Shootout Entry List Released

Adios, Eduardo...

As expected, Eduardo Najera is no longer a Denver Nugget. I think we can collectively agree that we sincerely appreciated Najera's time in Denver. He gave a solid effort on a nightly basis, and his toughness and energy around the basket will be missed.

Who's going to set picks now?

Wow. They got him cheap.

If I'm reading that story correctly, only $8m guaranteed.

Warkentien better have some kind of move up his sleeve before Halloween...

Hmmmm...

I read it again, and the fourth year is guaranteed but the third is partially non-guaranteed? How would that work?

Something is odd about the writing or about my reading.

agreed, Petey - it makes no sense!

I'm probably in the great minority here, but I was not the biggest Eddie fan. I admired the heart, but he just doesn't have the skill set and got by on sheer hustle, which was a great example for these bums, but bottom line is, if I have to choose between reupping Eddie or JR, it's JR in a heartbeat. And I wasn't sold on him being a tough guy. He would take elbows and the occasional bloody nose, but that doesn't mean he was tough in the intimidating sense, he was more the battler type, which ain't all bad considering this band of thugs here...

Oh well, so long Eduardo.

And NJ picked up another nice player along the way in Jarvis Hayes. I like the New Jersey Front Office! Smart move!

eddy did us good. probably the player who moved best without the ball on this nuggets' team. he will be missed. i doubt he will get much minutes in NJ but. behind nenad, boone, yi, sean williams even maybe. i dunno. good luck to him!

The third year will not be guaranteed due to LeBron being on the market in 2 years. The Nets plan to be able to offer him the Max.
So keeping that in mind, it would make sense that if the team picked up the 3rd year option, it would instantly make the fourth guaranteed, thus his salary does not count against the cap in 2 years due to the option.

He was a blue collar type player, and I admired his play.

Najera really improved his three point shooting. Also, he was a great spark off the bench. I would have preferred to see him play in a Nuggets' uniform next season, but at least he signed with an Eastern Conference team.

The funny thing is he wanted to stay a Nugget. So much for that.

"Setting picks" sounds an awful lot like offensive playcalling to me. Why do we need that, again?

"I'm probably in the great minority here, but I was not the biggest Eddie fan. I admired the heart, but he just doesn't have the skill set "

Najara is a limited player, but check out Denver's +/- stats from last year. Other than Iverson, Najara had the best +/- on the team.

In other words, we were a lot better when he was on the floor than when he was on the bench.

"if I have to choose between reupping Eddie or JR, it's JR in a heartbeat."

Of course, but considering how cheaply Najara went, it wasn't an either/or proposition.

Let's hope Warkentien has other plans for the money, and that they're not just pinching luxury tax pennies while burning luxury tax dollars. I'm worried we're falling into the Phoenix trap - spending enough to win, but cutting enough corners not to be elite.

Makes no sense.

Najara wanted more years, not fewer. If things are as you describe, he's only getting two years guaranteed, which I'd bet the farm isn't the case.

And if my understand of the CBA rules are correct, a team can only have a team option in the final year of a contract, which would make the contract not legal as described in the article.

If they fail to resign Smith, I'll lose my mind. However, if Smith reups then you have an interesting situation. I doubt Smith is going to sign unless they tell him he can start. So, now you are talking about most likely putting Smith at the point. Not the worst idea I have ever heard based on the LA series. The problem is then that you have Smith defending the other 2 and Melo defending the other 3. We might score more points but our defense will be worse if that's possible. I think the key to the season is the health and motivation of Nene. If he's healthy you have Iverson, Smith, Melo, Martin, and Camby with Nene, Kleiza, Carter and Weems/Green coming off the bench.

by Paterade on Jul 12, 2008 8:28 AM MDT reply actions

Fuck.

I want Smith, if Smith doesn't sign, I'll support other team... fucking GM...

We could pick Mario Chalmers and we get that shit of Charlotte... fuck!

by Lucas Navarrete on Jul 12, 2008 3:37 PM MDT reply actions

Definitely.

I think JR would be fine with coming off the bench like he did in the LA series. That worked well for him. He got his 30+ minutes, contributed and played well. The best i've seen him play actually. He suits that role.

Interestingly, the FOUR times JR got more than 30 minutes in a game last season (pre-season, regular season and post-season) he had great games. Notably the 43 points in Chicago, 26 points in Game 4 against LA and in two pre-season games where he put up 33 points in one of those games and a career high 7 assists.

JR can really produce when given the responsibility of actually having minutes. He actually ranked #1 in the NBA in Three-Point Field Goals Per 48 Minutes(5.3). To think this guy only gets 19 minutes a game! That's insane! There's no wonder that there's websites wanting this coach outta' here! He did click late last season though and even then, he averaged a decent 15.7 points but was only getting less than 22 minutes per game still. Crazy.

Man we need this guy. Bad

by andrew fisher on Jul 13, 2008 12:28 AM MDT reply actions

Yeah, J.R is nice, but I've a feeling that he won't re-sign...

by Lucas Navarrete on Jul 13, 2008 2:05 AM MDT reply actions

it doesnt matter if jr doesnt re sign he is a restricted free agent if he signs anywhere else we can match and I doubt anyone is going to offer more than the mle which we better match. As for eddie I will miss seeing a guy who actually gave a shit night in and night out. He was awesome in the Denver community and all in all a fun guy to watch stick his nose in there with bigger stronger guys and take the punishment. Good luck to him.

In a team filled with a lot of selfishness, including the coach; it is truly sad to see such an unselfish hustler leave the team.
What made him such an asset to the team was that he knew his role and played it well. The Nuggets as a whole still don't know who the leader of their team is!

by Anonymous on Jul 13, 2008 9:54 PM MDT reply actions

If Denver doesn't re-sign JR Smith, It will be the worst offseason possible for the Nuggests. He is clearly talented and just needs some focus (That's where George comes in...)

by Si on Jul 14, 2008 1:17 AM MDT reply actions

Haven't been here in a while.

Farewell Eddie. During last season and the season before, often you were the only player on the floor (besides AI) that played with a crapload of heart.

by ohxten on Jul 14, 2008 8:38 AM MDT reply actions

I honestly think the Nuggets will fail to make the post-season next year. Najera was an essential player in their scheme, had by far their highest plus/minus ratio, and was the only person who felt inclined to move without the ball.

Nuggets in 2008/2009 - 36-46.

STIFF LIST (as of 2/7 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. THE NUGGETS AT HOME
How is it possible that a Nuggets team with this much talent can be 7-5 at home?! Things have gotten so bad that fans are clamoring for J.R. Smith to return.

2. CARMELO ANTHONY
Kobe Bryant plays through any and all ailments. Melo uses any and ailments as an excuse not to play.

3. KEVIN LOVE
Just when the T'Wolves are looking better, Love stomps on Luis Scola and lands himself a two-game suspension.

4. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS
The 'Cats have lost 11 straight and are now 3-21 ... in the Eastern Conference! This is what happens when you let an underwear salesman with a Hitler mustache run your team.

5. MIKE BROWN
Dr. Bunsen Honeydew (Google it!) got himself a one-game suspension for making contact with a referee.
