Yakhouba Diawara, meet your replacement...

The Nuggets "participated" in last night's draft after all, trading a future second round draft pick (so they can sit out another draft probably) for Arkansas swingman Sonny Weems. I know nothing about Weems. I just read his bio at DraftExpress.com and it sounds like he's quite an athlete, but doesn't have a particularly accurate jumper and isn't a great defender (terrific). But from a silver-lining perspective, he was a senior and he's 6'6".

It sounds like we just picked up another Bobby Jones (the 2008 African-American version, not the 1970's Caucasian version, in case you were confused).

If any of you know anything about Weems, please share!

Check out this link... have you ever seen a less enthusiastic set of comments from those involved in the Sonny Weems deal? Half of what they are saying doesn't even make any sense and it's like they're "coach speaking" their coach speak. Jesus! I hope this kid pans out. He's got a great name though to pair with Carmelo Anthony on the growing list of "African-Americans with Italian mobster sounding names".

YUP- all of the Nuggs problems are because of Carmelo Anthony! The so-called "management" of this team, have struck again! Giving up fuure choices for Sonny Weems? Who btw, fits right in to the "typical" G. Karl, Enver Nuggets-type player! No jumper, little defense, lackluster attitude! Welcome, Mr. Weems!

Weems won the dunk contest this year. thats all I know about him.

I'm sure Scott Hastings called in a favor. He wants an Arkansas player out there that he won't be able to STFU about. It's bad enough he talks constantly about Ronnie Brewer and Janerro Pargo, and they're not even Nuggets.

Looks like a player with a lot of potential. Like the energy.

Could allow the Nuggies to deal some other players.

From what I read he's solid defensively. *shrug*

Wow, viracocha sounds almost as stupid as Rex Chapman. Keep your cliches. Potential? Energy? And how does a mid-second round pick warrant 'dealing' other players? Maybe it means Diawara or Greene are gone, but drafting Sonny Weems doesn't facilitate a trade that otherwise wouldn't have happened.

Trade AI. Trade Camby. Stitch up a Weems 14ers jersey.

Jordan was 6'6"

I'm just sayin' is all...

i love when "anonymous" people try to be tough.

being a mid-second round pick has nothing to do with "warranting the dealing of other players." there are plenty of first round busts and late round gems to support that. by possible moves, i was referring to the future because he's young.

if you look at his style of play, how could you not say he has potential? you're bandwagon banter is the real cliche. Same shit everyone else says just different asshole saying it.

shut up twat, fans like you are the reason the team refuses to improve. Showing up regardless of the product on the floor with your Boykins jersey sucking off the front office. I've been a season ticket holder for almost a decade and I'm sick of it.

Whaaaaa! Sounds like a lot of whining to me. You've got the insight of an adolescent boy, angry at life because your pro-active didn't come before prom. Take your child-like ideas to the playground. Maybe someone will listen to you in-between a game of hop scotch.

I'm intrigued. If you believe in draft value, you'd have to say that this was premeditated. He was one of the few guys our FO had targeted and once they knew he was going to be drafted late, they bought a futures option with their first round pick-- we'll have to see what that bet leaves us with.

The best part is that the Nuggets have done something we've asked for years... they drafted a shooting guard! Now I just wonder if he can actually shoot.

He is fast as crap and pretty athletic. He ran the fastest 3/4 court sprint in the history of the Orlando Draft Camp (and EVERYONE participates in these drlls, although not necessarily the camp itself). He also had the second fastest lane agility test of all the prospects this year. So what does this mean?

Not a whole heck of a lot besides just being fast. We'll see how it translates to the court.

Hmm... a little blog post fighting going on up top. Kind of funny. But I did like the gangster name comment, that was pretty funny. Anyways I am glad to see we tried something and the video on youtube of this kid is actually really impressive. He looks exactly like Smith. But what I really have to say is about the draft and the potential moves we could have landed last night. I don't know if anyone noticed but we really need a PG for next year. Last night was the perfect opertunity to bust out one of the many talked about trades this summer and what did we do, nothing. Denver is all talk. We could have traded anyone of a few players last night to aquire Bayless, Augustine or even Chalmers and we just sat there with our heads in our asses while teams like Portland, Indiana and New Jersey ran away with the draft. And considering what Portland gave up to get Bayless it's absolutely pathetic that we didn't even make an attempt with the kind of talent we could afford to expend. Nice one Denver, way to be on top of your game. NOT!!!

He could have some potential I guess. I watched him score 31 points on IU, but that's about it.

More than anything else, I have the same question as everybody else! WHAT'S THE FRIGGIN' PLAN? What is this front-office looking to do to reach the promised land? Why- in everything thats holy, do you bring back Karl to rerun a "system", that's a PROVEN failure? We have the same team, same coach, same players, same philosphy, yet this team's mngt. thinks THIS year will be different? Are you kidding me?

by Anonymous on Jun 28, 2008 8:23 PM MDT reply actions

Weems sounds alright but he doesn't help us where we need it. Whose gonna run the point, Anthony Carter? Chucky Adkins? Old retreads that got no game. I thought Chalmers had some potential to come in and help us right away. Weems may help down the road but does this mean we're gonna go with the same crap again this year. This FO gives me a friggin headache! I hate these guys.

does he have the DESIRE to defend the likes of Kobe? Much like Pierce asked to guard him with the game on the line. I wish the Nuggets had someone like that, hint hint.. =P'

by NoYPi on Jun 30, 2008 6:43 PM MDT reply actions

A speed demon like him is a great pick up, for his position in the draft. It's just too bad that the only skills he will develope under Karl, is the ability to outrun team mates on a fast break. And not hustle back in transition.

If this kid is as fast as his stats say he is, then he could be a good defender. Based on the fact that a quick first step on offense would have to be faster than his. He's got a natural advantage. But alas Capt'n Karl would never exploit a natural talent. Nor would he ever think 'Hey maybe all offense doesn't work all the time.'

The denver post is reporting that the nuggets did NOT offer a tender for Yakouhba Diawara meaning he is now an unrestricted free-agent. So long koub, we hardly new ye

Anyone else baffled that the Nugs made a move for the slam dunk champion (Weems) instead of the All-American (CDR). This appears to be another classic example of NBA front office ineptitude. I hope I’m wrong but CDR’s drop to the second round reminded me of Carlos Boozer. Do these NBA executives even watch college basketball? Douglas-Roberts was a prime time player on one of the nation’s top teams, but we got the slam dunk guy. Am I supposed to be excited or just sad?

by Anonymous on Jul 1, 2008 8:58 PM MDT reply actions

Don't know alot but I know this, every time Weems worked out with CDR he flat out school him. I know for a fact the Grizzles had to stop play and tell CDR to quit holding Weems' jersey. Maybe the other teams saw that CDR wasn't as good w/o his buddies. And believe me he is good i'm from memphis i know.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
